Jamilia N. Smith is of counsel to Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough in Atlanta, where her practice focuses on addressing the immigration issues facing businesses and families. 

Ms. Smith has extensive experience consulting with existing and prospective corporate clients and international entertainers regarding the transfer and/or employment of foreign nationals, available immigration options, appropriate visa classifications, permanent labor certification, visa processing issues, I-9 compliance/eVerify and other compliance issues. 

 

She assists corporate clients with nearly every aspect of business immigration law, the temporary and permanent sponsorship of multinational executives and managers, intracompany transferees, professionals and skilled workers. Her clients include Fortune 500 companies, multinational corporations, hospitals, law firms, and small and mid-sized businesses, academic institutions and entertainers.  

 

In addition, Ms. Smith represents individuals and families in securing US lawful permanent residence through family sponsorship.  She consults on the affect of criminal convictions on eligibility for US lawful permanent residence and citizenship.

 

Before joining Nelson Mullins, she was a senior associate attorney with one of Atlanta's largest boutique immigration law firms specializing exclusively in business and family immigration law. She was also the senior associate attorney with one of the largest immigration boutique practices in the greater New York area; has worked in the Executive Office for Immigration Review, Immigration Court, New York; and has was a law clerk/criminal specialist for the State of Connecticut Superior Court.

 

Ms. Smith is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and serves as the 2009-10 Chair of the Atlanta Chapter's Customs & Border Protection Committee. She is a member of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys and serves as the 2009-10 Co-Chair of the Large Firm Section.  She is also a member of the American Bar Association, Gate City Bar Association, and the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association. She was a presenter at the Institute for Continuing Legal Education in Georgia's seminars on Business Immigration Law and Family Immigration Law and a faculty member on Immigration Compliance and Enforcement at a full-day seminar presented by Lorman Education Services.  She is also frequently asked to conduct immigration and I-9 trainings for human resources professionals.

 

She earned a Juris Doctor in 1999 from Hofstra University School of Law, where she was the student editor of the Hofstra Law & Policy Symposium and studied in the Housing Rights Clinic program. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a dual major in Politics and African & African-American Studies in 1995 from Brandeis University.
